The list of tech companies leaving the Bay Area or downsizing their office footprints just got a little longer.

Snowflake, a cloud software company, is no longer headquartered in San Mateo, as first reported by the San Francisco Business Times. Bozeman, Montana, will replace Silicon Valley address as its new “principal executive office.”

The odd title was chosen because the company said it actually no longer has a headquarters at all, instead championing a globally distributed workforce. In an earnings call this week, executives said they chose Bozeman because the Securities and Exchange Commission requires companies to designate a principal executive office. Since both CEO Frank Slootman and Chief Financial Officer Mike Scarpelli are based in the mountain town, the Montana address made more sense.

The San Mateo office will remain open, and the company has 983 employees in the Bay Area, according to LinkedIn.

Many other high-profile tech companies have made moves in 2021 and 2020. Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced in 2020 it would be moving its headquarters to Houston, though it kept its San Jose campus. Redwood City-based Oracle is also moving to Texas, choosing Austin to be the headquarters of its “more flexible employee work location policy.” Digital Realty, a data center company, also announced they’ll be moving to Austin earlier this year.

Meanwhile, other big companies have been shrinking their square footage. Salesforce, the city’s largest private employer, canceled its 325,000-square-foot lease at the unbuilt Parcel F tower in San Francisco’s Transbay neighborhood in March. Airbnb has space at three office buildings up for sublease, offering up more than 424,000 square feet.
