Federal parliament sits despite lockdowns

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will base himself in Canberra from next week ahead of federal parliament sittings in August.

Mr Morrison has been in lockdown in Sydney while the state deals with a coronavirus outbreak.

“I intend to be able to relocate to Canberra next week, in preparation for the parliamentary sittings that will take place in August,” he told reporters on Thursday.

There has been speculation state restrictions would put the brakes on the August sittings going ahead.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese has already based himself in Canberra ahead of the sittings.

A number of MPs are expected to opt to stay in their states and videoconference in to parliament, under special rules set up at the start of the pandemic.
