“There have been many questions related to lost mail, mail that was on hold in the building, etc. Based on the latest information from the Postal Inspector’s Office this morning, any outgoing mail that had been dropped off prior to Saturday afternoon’s collection time should be safe. Any outgoing mail dropped off after Saturday’s afternoon collection or that was otherwise stored inside the building is questionable at this time,” according to Town Manager Brandon Perkins.

“The Inspector reiterated to me this morning that the exterior of the building does not reflect the extent of the damage inside the building. A lot of the mail that was not destroyed was covered in soot and smelled of heavy smoke. Some mail may have water damage. At any rate, whatever could be salvaged was transported to the PTC facility and is being sorted with the intent of getting it to its intended recipient. As far as missing mail goes, I was advised that they may not know about missing packages until customers begin reporting that they have not received expected packages/envelopes,” Perkins said.

“We will continue to keep you updated as information comes in, but the public is encouraged to reach out to the USPS with the contact information from the press release above going forward,” Perkins said.
