Is Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Star-Crossed’ a Country Album? Vote!

Kacey Musgraves’ fifth studio album star-crossed has been deemed ineligible for the country album of the year Grammy at next year’s awards show, but do you think it should compete in the country category or not?

Cindy Mabe, president of Universal Music Group Nashville, wrote a letter to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., obtained by Billboard, expressing her discontent with the screening committee’s decision made last week. According to a source, one of the album’s songs, “Camera Roll,” was submitted and accepted for the best country song category.

Compared to Musgraves’ previous four albums, star-crossed was released on UMGN’s MCA Nashville imprint as well as pop label Interscope Records in a new joint partnership. The album opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200. Three of Musgraves’ past albums — 2013’s Same Trailer Different Park, 2015’s Pageant Material and 2018’s Golden Hour — have been considered in the country album category, with Same Trailer Different Park and Golden Hour each winning the award. Golden Hour also won album of the year at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
