Marcos visits Manila school on first day of classes

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited the Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School in Malate, Manila on Monday, the first day of classes.

Accompanied by Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, Marcos greeted students and teachers. He had a reading session with one class.

In a video conference with different public schools nationwide which followed his inspection, the President said efforts to improve the education system are on deck.

He directed the Department of Information and Communications Technology to widen and improve the internet coverage so that it may reach schools in far-flung areas, and the Department of Trade and Industry to ensure there will be no overpricing of school supplies.

The Department of Health, on the other hand, was directed to ensure public schools have facilities for first-aid needs, and the Philippine National Police to ramp up security near schools.

“If you see anything else that can be improved, please let us know. Tell your DepEd representative, even at the LGU, up to the region, so we can know. Your superintendents, please give us whatever you think we can do to make things better,” he said.

“Anyway, it’s just the first day but we are watching, we are watching over all of you to make sure that all the needs, especially those of our youth, are somehow met,” he added.
