WSIB, OCEU reach tentative deal to possibly end months-long labour dispute

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has reached a tentative agreement with the Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU), potentially bringing an end to a months-long labour disruption, the organization announced Saturday.

The deal is still subject to a ratification vote, but Ontario’s workplace insurer which employs 159 unionized and 26 non-unionized workers in Windsor — said it is prepared to welcome its full team back within 24 hours of the agreement’s approval.

“Our number one priority has always been — and continues to be — helping the people who depend on us,” WSIB president and CEO Jeff Lang said in a press release Saturday.

“We do work that makes a difference in people’s lives and in our communities. I am proud of our team’s work the last few weeks and am very excited for everyone to come back together so we can keep supporting Ontarians who need us.”

On May 22, WSIB launched the first strike in the Crown agency’s 111-year history. Heavy workload and wages that haven’t kept pace with inflation were the meat of the union’s demands.

WSIB employs about 3,600 people across Ontario and provides workplace injury and illness coverage to more than 5.3 million Ontarians in more than 300,000 workplaces.

In the press release, Lang also thanked the public for their ongoing patience.

In the event of an injury or illness on the job, WSIB offers wage-loss benefits, medical support, return-to-work services, and no-fault liability insurance.
