Along with watching the biggest football game of the year, witnessing the halftime show in person and snagging the coolest merchandise, a large part of the fun of attending a Super Bowl is the atmosphere. Not only are Super Bowl attendees surrounded by fellow diehards rooting on their favorite team (as well as some of the biggest celebrities on the planet), but they get to soak in a once-in-a-lifetime experience, often in a wonderful city. Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans was no different, and at the Caesars Superdome on Sunday night (Feb. 9), the local flavor made its impact on the music inside the stadium, with plenty of tributes, sing-alongs and singular moments for football fans.
Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was met with loud cheers, as was Jon Batiste’s rendition of the national anthem — but some of the coolest music moments within the Superdome never made it to air. Those who showed up early on game day got to walk around the stadium as music echoed throughout the dome, and as the game got underway — and the Philadelphia Eagles began to dominate the Kansas City Chiefs — Philly fans were given plenty of sing-along fodder during commercial breaks. Who could have expected a song originally from the early ’60s to earn more full-throated singing than some of Lamar’s halftime hits?
If you were watching on TV, however, you might have missed some of the fun being had in the Big Easy. Below are a handful of memorable in-stadium music moments from Super Bowl LIX.
“Walk It Out” Into the Stadium
Unk, the Atlanta DJ and rapper behind the 2006 top 10 hit “Walk It Out,” sadly passed away at the age of 43 last month. “Walk It Out” echoed through the Superdome as fans filed into the stadium two hours before game time, however, and some attendees noted the musical tribute with appreciation and subtle dance moves.
Lady Gaga Gets Hands Waving
Lady Gaga’s pre-taped performance of “Hold My Hand” on Bourbon Street, which was dedicated to the victims of the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, was played on screens throughout the Superdome before kickoff as it aired worldwide on the telecast. While some fans were still finding their seats during the performance, plenty of others were paying attention, with arms outstretched and cell phone lights waved during the song’s climax.
A Very Nola “America the Beautiful”
Lousiana natives Lauren Daigle and Trombone Shorty delivered a jazzy rendition of “America the Beautiful,” and Superdome attendees absolutely lapped up the spirited performance — you seldom see football fans dancing to the anthem, but the horn blasts encouraged movement.
Kendrick’s Halftime Performance Tease
In a key sequence during the first half of Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles sacked Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on back-to-back plays before snagging a pick-six on third down. Immediately after that first sack, however, a few seconds of Kendrick Lamar’s “TV Off” played in the Superdome — a gesture toward the impending halftime show that felt almost inadvertent, but that seemingly juiced up the Eagles D.
Euphoric Eagles Fans Sing-Along No. 1: Icona Pop
Right before halftime, as the Philadelphia Eagles had already amassed a 24-0 lead in the game, Icona Pop’s “I Love It” echoed through the Superdome, and Birds fans were more than ready to bellow “I don’t care! I love it!” when the chorus hit.
Euphoric Eagles Fans Sing-Along No. 2: DJ Otzi
Ditto that iconic chorus of “Heyyyy, hey baby! (Ooh! Ahh!) I wanna knowww, if you’ll be my girl” of DJ Otzi’s verison of Bruce Channel’s 1962 Billboard Hot 100-topper “Hey! Baby,” which Eagles fans swarmed when it was played in the Superdome as Philly was rolling.
The Military Salute
Most NFL games include a salute to service members, and the Super Bowl was no different, with thousands of attendees giving a standing ovation to the military members present at the game. Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” was played in the Superdome during the segment, with several fans joining in with the sing-along.
Euphoric Eagles Fans Sing-Along No. 3: Neil Diamond
Every sports fans loves singing along to “Sweet Caroline” in a stadium setting, and while the second half sing-along was dominated by giddy Birds fans, it seems like some Chiefs fans couldn’t resist and were belting it out, too.
Blowing the Whistle
As fans exited the Superdome and the celebration began for Eagles fans, one clever attendee whipped out a loud whistle while walking through the concourse, and were alternating between tooting out Too $hort’s “Blow the Whistle” (which had been adopted as an unofficial Eagles song) and the synth line of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” with dozens partying along around them and heading toward Bourbon Street.
