“This ranking speaks to the bold and impactful contributions our researchers make at the international stage,” said Shanthi Johnson, the university’s vice-president of Research and Innovation. “Our commitment to emerging technologies makes UWindsor a leader in AI research, contributing to our nation’s global reputation and competitiveness.”
UWindsor ranks 33 on the overall list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, released Thursday as part of a publication called Canada’s Innovation Leaders 2024.
The report comes from consulting firm Research Infosource Inc., which also publishes rankings for Canadian hospitals, colleges, and corporations that engage in research and development.
The rankings are based on data from the fiscal year ending in 2023, when UWindsor had $32,485,000 in sponsored research income, according to Research Infosource Inc.
UWindsor also ranks fourth in Canada for the total amount of funding it brings in from international governments, sixth for the percentage of its research income coming from not-for-profit organizations, and seventh in the percentage of its research income coming from corporations.

Johnson said collaborations with community, government, and industry partners helped boost UWindsor’s rankings.
“UWindsor is not only competitive with larger comprehensive institutions, it surpasses them in several categories,” she said.
UWindsor said its performance in the latest ranking follows recognition the school received in June as the most improved Canadian institution in the QS World University Rankings. The global list ranked UWindsor 547th out of more than 5,600 universities worldwide, an improvement of nearly 100 spots since 2021.
The QS World University Rankings, produced by the leading higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assessed more than 5,600 universities worldwide. Of those, 1,503 made the final list, putting Windsor in the top 37 per cent.
