Paul Kafeero’s Family Demands UGX 2 Billion from Gravity Omutujju Over “Walumbe Zaaya” Remix

The family of the late Kadongo Kamu legend Paul Kafeero has issued a legal demand against rapper Gravity Omutujju for allegedly violating copyright laws by remixing the classic song Walumbe Zaaya without authorization.

According to a demand notice from GM Kibirige & Co. Advocates, the family—represented by administrators Kafeero Thomas and Nagawa Elizabeth—accuses Gravity Omutujju of gross violations of copyright and neighboring rights. The rapper allegedly re-produced, performed, and published a music video titled Walumbe Zaaya Rmx in 2012, using unauthorized audio and visual fixations, including the original voice of the late singer.

The legal team highlights that this act infringes on Kafeero’s Moral and Economic Rights, as well as intellectual property protections. They are demanding that Gravity Omutujju:

  1. Ceases and desists from distributing or commercially exploiting the song.
  2. Immediately removes the remix from all platforms.
  3. Pays damages amounting to UGX 2 billion for unauthorized use over the years.
  4. Provides a full financial accountability statement detailing all earnings from the remix.

The demand letter, dated February 10, 2025, warns of legal action should the rapper fail to comply. The late Paul Kafeero, who passed away in 2007, remains one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians, and his estate is keen on protecting his legacy.

Gravity Omutujju has yet to issue a public response to the legal claims.
