Adele Considered Three ‘Very Different’ Options Before Releasing ‘Easy on Me’ as New Single

Without giving too much away, she dropped a few details about the songs that were almost chosen as the lead single from 30.

“Obviously ‘Easy on Me,’ and then there’s another one which is like, I got very into Goldfrapp again,” she noted.

“There’s another one that’s very sort of ’70s, like piano, singer-songwriter-y,” added Adele. “When I say piano, I mean it’s got a whole band on it, but just very Carpenters, like very Elton, whatever.”

In the end Adele went with “Easy on Me” because of its “soaring chorus” — and because it simply “just felt like a me song,” which felt important to her after not releasing a new album since 2015.

Adele’s “Easy on Me” arrived on Oct. 14 as the first taste of 30, and it’s headed for a noteworthy chart debut. Of the three albums she’s previously released, she’s had two No. 1s on the Billboard 200 albums chart (with a record-smashing first week for 2015’s 25, which sold 3.38 million copies in just its debut week in the U.S.) and four No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.
