Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf Elected as New AU Commission Chairperson
The African Union (AU) has elected Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, as the new chairperson of the AU Commission. His victory was announced during the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held on Saturday.

Youssouf, who will serve from 2025 to 2028, takes over from Moussa Faki Mahamat, the outgoing chair and former Chadian prime minister who completed his two-term tenure. He won against Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Madagascar’s former Foreign Minister Richard Randriamandrato.
During his campaign, Youssouf emphasized his commitment to strengthening the AU’s Peace and Security Council, ensuring stable financing for the union, operationalizing the African Standby Force, and enhancing intra-African trade. He also promised to advocate for Africa’s position on the global stage.
“The Africa we want is one of peace, integration, and prosperity. As chairperson, I will work tirelessly to ensure our continent shines internationally,” Youssouf stated.
His leadership comes at a crucial time as the AU seeks to enhance economic cooperation and security across its 55 member states.
