MUNA’s Katie Gavin Puts an Acoustic Spin on Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’: Watch

The singer recently shared her first solo LP What a Relief.

MUNA fans, rejoice — your “Prayer” has been answered by Katie Gavin.

On Monday (Dec. 2), Gavin appeared on SiriusXM’s The Coffee House, where the MUNA frontwoman delivered a pared-down, acoustic rendition of Madonna‘s hit single “Like a Prayer.” Putting her own spin on the beloved track, Gavin’s new rendition swaps out Madonna’s high-energy gospel stylings for a folksy, singer-songwriter sound. Highlighting the song’s tender lyrics, the singer crooned the inimitable chorus, singing “In the midnight hour, I can feel your power/ Just like a prayer, you know I’ll take you there.”

Elsewhere on the broadcast, Gavin also performed three songs from her debut solo album What a Relief; lead single “Aftertaste” as well as “Inconsolable” and “Today.” Released in October, Gavin’s latest album saw the singer moving away from her work with MUNA in order to pursue a “Lilith Fair-core” sound. “There is a tonal difference that speaks to the scale of things — MUNA has become so ambitious, so the songs have to be scalable to a certain size,” she told Billboard . “A lot of these songs feel like they live in a much smaller world.”

This isn’t the first time Gavin has made headlines for a cover in 2024 — during MUNA’s headlining set at All Things Go NYC in September, the band performed an acoustic rendition of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe” after the singer pulled out of the festival just one day prior. “We just want to say that we love Chappell so much,” Gavin told the crowd before her cover. “We started as a queer band in 2014, and we’ve really been given the time and the grace that we needed to be nourished as artists. We wish nothing but that times a million for her.”
