Western Cape Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 12-year-old girl from Wesbank, Cape Town, at the weekend. 

The girl died after gunmen allegedly opened fire on a group of children during load shedding on Sunday evening.  

Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said Mfuleni Crime Intelligence arrested an adult male for murder and attempted murder in Wesbank in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“According to reports, the members attended to a shooting complaint on Sunday at Ouplaas [Crescent], Wesbank. Upon arrival, they found a 12-year-old girl who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and three other youngsters with injuries due to gunshot wounds sustained to their bodies,” Manyana said. 

She added that police received information about the whereabouts of the suspect and swooped on the identified address.

“They found the suspect at the premises and arrested him on charges of murder and attempted murder,” she said. 

The suspect is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
