Police give update on Anambra stampede, say death toll now 22
A tragic stampede during the distribution of palliatives in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, has claimed the lives of 22 people, the state police command confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday when a local philanthropist organized the event to distribute relief materials to residents.
In a statement released on Sunday, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga shared that Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam had visited the hospital where injured victims are receiving treatment.
“The Commissioner sympathized with the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery,” Ikenga stated.
He also noted that investigations into the cause of the stampede are ongoing, emphasizing the command’s commitment to ensuring public safety throughout the festive season.
