Onion Lake RCMP are investigating a report that three people impersonated RCMP officers and conducted a traffic stop in the area.

In a news release, RCMP said this week they received a report about three people in a black SUV with blue and red emergency lights who conducted a traffic stop on Onion Lake Cree Nation, demanding identification from the occupants of a vehicle.

Witnesses said the suspects were wearing black balaclavas and tactical gear. Their clothing did not resemble an RCMP uniform, the release said.

The occupants questioned the trio’s “identification and accreditation and were not provided clear answers as to who they were,” the release added.

The motorists continued on their way after the encounter.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

RCMP noted it’s illegal to impersonate a police officer, and anyone who is followed or pulled over by what they believe to be an imitation police vehicle should contact RCMP immediately.

Members of the public can always request identification from RCMP officers, including asking to see an officer’s badge and ID card. Both pieces will show the same regimental number and the ID card will have a photo, the release noted.
