Over a dozen Saskatchewan-filmed productions were previewed Monday at Regina’s Kramer IMAX Theatre in a celebration of the province’s revitalized film industry.

Creative Saskatchewan CEO Erin Dean expressed gratitude for a grant that has been credited for helping pick the industry back up after it nearly collapsed amid a tax-credit cut by the province several years ago.

“All of these projects have utilized our Feature Film and TV Production Grant, which incentivizes spending within Saskatchewan, and is only possible thanks to the investment from the Government of Saskatchewan,” stated Dean in a news release issued by the province.

Monday’s screenings, hosted by the provincial government and Creative Saskatchewan, featured previews and behind-the-scenes footage from 13 productions filmed during the 2023-24 fiscal year, including Guardians of the North, Treaty Road, Red River Gold, Flat Out Food, and more.

Creative Saskatchewan provides funding for a variety of projects, including animation, documentaries, feature films and TV series. It has committed about $22 million to 36 productions through the Feature Film and Television Production Grant since April 2023. Those 36 productions are estimated to produce a “Saskatchewan spend of over $55 million, generating an approximate economic output of $93 million and support more than 900 jobs,” the province said in the release.

Last year, Creative Saskatchewan announced that the grant had an economic impact of at least $21 million since its inception in 2022.

The province invests $12 million annually to support film and television production in Saskatchewan, the release notes, adding that it will also provide $500,000 to assist the Saskatchewan Science Centre with the purchase of the IMAX GT dual laser digital projection system installed last year.

“The industry is growing in Saskatchewan, and the films screened today demonstrate both the variety of productions and the versatility of our province as a filming destination,” stated Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said in the release.

Creative Saskatchewan will also have access to the Kramer IMAX Theatre and the projection system to host production screenings in the future.
