AEW Dynamite: FTR win AAA Tag Team Titles as masked Super Frogs with very subtle tribute to Eddie Guerrero

FTR won the AAA Tag Team Championships on AEW Dynamite this week dressed as new masked duo the Super Frogs.

The team of Dax Hardwood and Cash Wheeler – known as The Revival stars Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder in WWE before their exit in April 2020 – were revealed as Andrade El Idolo’s mystery masked tag team as they took on the Lucha Brothers for the gold.

The former champs had the titles for over two years (853 days) before this loss, but they still have the AEW Tag Team Championships after beating the Young Bucks as All Out.

On a special Saturday night episode of Dynamite, Andrade brought out the Super Ranas – which means Super Frogs in Spanish – but even commentary played up who was under the masks.

That hurt would could have been a brilliant and hilarious reveal for people watching on TV, but it was still a fun moment as the masks got pulled off early on.

In the end, interference from Tully Blanchard and a belt shot on Fenix was enough to give FTR the win and the gold.

It’s a bit bizarre seeing the duo get the win, as they are perhaps the team you’d least expect to be holding the AAA titles in terms of style and influence – but that will be part of the fun.

AEW did well to explain them getting involved too, beyond knowing Andrade from their WWE days in NXT, as El Idolo met MJF backstage and revealed he’d paid for the Pinnacle’s services for one night only.

Following the match, the duo basked in their moment of glory, and Cash revealed he even paid tribute to Eddie Guerrero in a very, very subtle way during the match.

Sharing a photo of the championship and his boots – which carried a flame design similar to that worn by the late legend – he also seems to have been wearing Latino Heat socks during the match.

He tweeted: ‘Honored to carry and defend these prestigious pieces of lucha history. It’s not easy being the greatest tag team of a generation, but we’ll wear that responsibility with pride.

‘Thank you @AndradeElIdolo. Long live Las Super Ranas #AEWDynamite #LivingLegendLuchadores #GTTOAT (sic)’

Dax used similar hashtags, and posted a photo of his title belt with FTR’s Grand Slam t-shirt which features the dates of their NXT, Raw, SmackDown and AEW championship victories.

He wrote: ‘We’re gonna need a new star. First, @luchalibreaaa Tag Team Champions. Next, AEW World Tag Team Champions.’
