Even as extreme heat is affecting people’s livelihood and day-to-day activities, 50 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded in Rajasthan’s Phalodi on Saturday, reported news agency PTI. Meanwhile, as per experts, extreme heat is expected to affect parts of Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra till May 29. A ‘red’ warning has been issued for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, indicating a “very high likelihood” of heat illness and heatstroke for all age groups.

Extreme heat is being felt not only in the northern plains and central regions of the country but also in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. West Bengal’s Cooch Behar (40.5 degrees), Assam’s Silchar (40), and Lumding (43), and Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar (40.5) and Pasighat (39.6) recorded their all-time high temperatures on Saturday.

According to official data, at least 17 places in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or above on Saturday.

Temperatures soared to a searing 51 degrees Celsius in Rajasthan’s Phalodi on Sunday, reported PTI.

Speaking to ANI, Senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said, “The maximum temperature was in West Rajasthan’s Phalodi, 51 degrees. The next 3-4 days will be the same in Rajasthan and we have issued a Red Alert. After that, there will be a gradual decrease in temperature. In Haryana too, we have issued a Red Alert… For Punjab, it is an orange alert for 2 days and then a red alert is issued.”

India heatwave news live: The severe heat wave in Rajasthan will continue for next two to three days, said India Meteorological Department on Sunday, reported news agency ANI.

“Maximum temperature has reached 50 degrees celsius for the first time in this summer season in Rajasthan. The highest temperature of 50 degrees was recorded in Phalodi in the last 24 hours,” Radheshyam Sharma, Director, Jaipur Meteorological Centre told ANI.

He said that temperature is likely to fall by about 2-3 degrees from 28-29 May.

In view of the heatwave conditions likely in Akola, Collector Ajit Kumbhar on Saturday imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) till May 31, prohibiting public gathering.
